Gummy Smile Treatment Options
Any cosmetic procedures performed on the gums to enhance the appearance of your smile and improve your oral health are referred to as periodontal plastic surgery. This includes gummy smile treatment options, a condition where excess gum tissue is affecting the appearance of your smile. Dr. Frederick Olden, a University Park, TX periodontist, offers gummy smile treatment and periodontal plastic surgery services to enhance your smile.
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
If you have a gummy smile, you may benefit from an esthetic crown lengthening procedure. This procedure is relatively simple in scope and typically takes about an hour to perform. Dr. Olden, our University Park TX periodontist, removes excess gum and bone tissue, then reshapes the gum line to expose more of your natural tooth. The procedure is also known as a “gum lift” because it alters the shape and look of the gums. The end result is that more natural tooth is exposed to create a more attractive smile.
In addition to its aesthetic benefits, esthetic crown lengthening can also preserve the health of your smile. Removing excess gum tissue can control and prevent periodontal disease, as exposing more of the tooth can decrease the depth of pockets between the teeth where bacteria can grow.
This gummy smile treatment is typically performed under local anesthetic. Dr. Olden will make small incisions in the gum tissue to separate the gums from the teeth. In some cases, a small amount of bone will also need to be removed to create a more natural looking smile. Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Olden will clean the incisions and place sutures and a special bandage over the treated area. This will promote the healing process.
Functional Crown Lengthening
If a tooth is excessively decayed, is broken below the gum line, or there is not sufficient structure for a tooth restoration like a crown or a bridge, you may benefit from a functional crown lengthening procedure. In this procedure, Dr. Olden will reshape the gums and supporting bone to make room for a high quality restoration. This procedure is performed in a similar fashion as the esthetic crown lengthening procedure, except that the final stage involves placing a crown or bridge.
